CHEF FRANK BRIGTSEN TO REPRESENT LOUISIANA IN 2006 GREAT AMERICAN SEAFOOD COOK-OFF

Frank Brigtsen, owner and chef of Brigtsen’s Restaurant, will represent Louisiana in the third annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans. Brigtsen is among 20 chefs from coast to coast who will vie for the title of King or Queen of American Seafood at the August 6 competition. The contest is held within the Louisiana Foodservice Expo at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Hall H. Opening ceremonies are at 11:45 a.m.; the awards presentation is at 3:30 p.m.

“The Great American Seafood Cook-Off is a showcase for both the chefs and American seafood, and an exciting way to educate consumers about the importance of asking for American seafood at the market or in restaurants,” said Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Board and event producer.

Brigtsen opened Brigtsen’s Restaurant with his wife, Marna, in 1986, after he worked seven years at Commander’s Palace and at Paul Prudhomme’s K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen. Named one of America’s Top 10 New Chefs in 1988 by Food and Wine magazine, Brigtsen later won Best Chef: Southeast at the James Beard Foundation Awards. Brigtsen’s Restaurant has been included in Nation’s Restaurant News’ Fine Dining Hall of Fame.

“This year’s national cook-off is extra special because it serves as a rallying point for Gulf seafood, which is plentiful, as well as safe and healthy for you,” said Bill Hogarth of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -- underwriter of the event. “Further, this annual event is a celebration of our nation’s great seafood and of the hardworking men and women who make up this vital industry.”

Alabama, Alaska, Georgia and Oregon held cook-offs to select their chefs; NOAA named one chef to represent the country. Chefs from California, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Washington also are competing.

The Great American Seafood Cook-Off is also supported by Shell Oil, Budweiser, Tabasco Brands, Southwest Cargo, Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, National Fisheries Institute, Gulf and South Atlantic Fisheries Foundation, Wild American Shrimp, and Texas Shrimp.
