The Guide breaks the video down into teachable sections.
Key points, vocabulary and actual text are provided
for each section. A table on starting points for the
video sections is also included.
Lifeway
Study Unit
This unit is keyed to Louisiana Content Standards for
Geography and History and includes activities, posters
and readings. Three sections of the video may be used
as an enrichment activity. The unit explores the fisher/shrimper/oyster-farmer
lifeway passed down for generations. The families? lives
were shaped by the forces of nature in the coastal lowlands.
To survive in such a constantly changing environment,
they developed strong family ties, self-reliance, and
special trade skills on the water.
Habitat
Study Unit
This unit is keyed to Louisiana Content Standards for
Environmental Science and Geography and includes activities,
posters, and readings. Two sections of the video can

basics of Louisiana?s seafood fisheries: the importance
of habitat, identification of key seafood species, the
enormous productivity of a saltwater marsh, the top
ranking Louisiana holds as the country?s seafood producer,
the causes and solutions to coastal wetland habitat
loss.
Reader
The Reader is a digest of research completed when producing
the video. It is provided as enrichment for educators
using this program. The Reader is a quick look at coastal
life over some 500 years and the development of seafood
harvest from a simple family effort to a full fledged
seafood industry. Included are Selected References on
experts, photography, and texts; and seafood recipes
and cooking tips.
